BDR carnage trial to take place at Dhaka Central Jail, not Alia Madrasah ground: Law ministry
The trial for the BDR massacre case will take place in a temporary court at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj instead of the previously planned location at the Dhaka Alia Madrasah ground.
In a notification issued in this regard today (12 January), the law ministry said, "The BDR carnage case will be heard in the temporary court at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj, rather than the temporary court set up in the field next to the Government Madrasah-e-Alia and Dhaka Central Jail in the Bakshi Bazar area of Dhaka."
The move comes after protests on 9 January by students who opposed the establishment of a temporary court at the madrasah ground in Bakshi Bazar.
Amid the protests, a fire broke out in the courtroom set up at the madrasah ground.
The protesting students said the ground had long been used by the city corporation and claimed it would remain under their control after the July uprising.
Between 25-26 February 2009, several hundred BDR personnel rose up in armed revolt during a three-day "BDR Week" at Pilkhana and carried out the killing of 74 people, including 57 army officers at Pilkhana headquarters of the paramilitary force.
Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) was later renamed as Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
