Chittagong Kings dominate Sylhet Strikers with comprehensive 30-run win
The victory propelled Chittagong to second place on the points table, while Sylhet slipped further into mid-table obscurity.
The Sylhet Strikers concluded their home phase of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) with a disappointing 30-run defeat to the Chittagong Kings at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
The Kings' clinical all-round performance, spearheaded by their overseas players, proved too strong for the Strikers.
The BPL arrived in Sylhet on 4 January, with matches beginning on 6 January. Over six days, the stadium hosted 12 electrifying games, drawing packed crowds to almost every fixture. Sylhet's passionate cricket fans created a carnival-like atmosphere, taking full advantage of the opportunity to watch two matches per day with a single ticket.
For many locals, the departure of the BPL from Sylhet is a moment of sadness. "I came to the stadium every day, mainly to support Sylhet Strikers," said Rudra, a college student. "The stands were always full, no matter which teams were playing. It's disheartening to see the tournament move away." Another fan, Sajib, added, "We rarely get to watch so many matches here. It's been a festival for us. I hope the BCB schedules more games in Sylhet in future BPL seasons."
The Chittagong Vikings, having won the toss, opted to bat first and showcased a commanding performance. Their openers set the tone with a blistering start, with Usman Khan and Graham Clark laying the foundation. Clark's 60 off 33 balls (3 fours, 5 sixes) and Usman's 53 off 35 balls (8 fours, 1 six) powered Chittagong to a formidable total. Contributions from Haider Ali (42* off 18) and skipper Mohammad Mithun (28 off 19) further solidified their innings, guiding the team to 203/6, their second-highest total this season.
Sylhet's bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught, with Tanzim Hasan Sakib managing 2 wickets. Nahidul Islam, Reuel Mia, and Ariful Haque chipped in with a wicket each.
In response, Sylhet Strikers started cautiously, a strategy that proved costly in a chase requiring over 10 runs an over. George Munsey top-scored with 52 off 37 balls but faced criticism for his slow start. Wicketkeeper-batsman Zakir Ali unleashed a late flourish, smashing an unbeaten 47 off 23 balls (3 fours, 4 sixes), but lacked support from the other end. The Strikers ended their innings on 173/8, falling short by 30 runs.
Chittagong's bowlers, led by Mohammad Wasim (3/27), delivered a clinical performance. Aliss Al Islam claimed 2 wickets, while Nabil Samad, Shariful Islam, and Khaled Ahmed took one apiece.
Sylhet Strikers' BPL campaign began with a loss and continued with two more defeats at home. However, they bounced back with two consecutive victories, injecting some hope into their season. Their final home game, however, ended in disappointment. With two wins from six matches, Sylhet now sit fifth on the table with four points, while Chittagong's third consecutive win moves them to second place with six points.
