Corruption will not be tolerated in the police: Dr Benazir

Inspector General of Bangladesh Police (IGP) Dr Benazir Ahmed has said that corrupt people cannot stay in the police force, and that anyone who wants to be rich must leave the force and opt for business instead.

The IGP made the comments during a video conference with all officers-in-charge (OC) of 660 police stations in the country at 11:30 am on Thursday said a press release issued by the Bangladesh Police.

During the video conference the IGP expressed his strong stance against corruption, the release added.

Dr Benazir said, "Don't make money illegally yourself, and don't give anyone else a chance to make money in an unlawful manner."

"Feel free to let us know if any senior police officer wants a bribe from you. I will look into the matter of that police officer personally," added Dr Benazir.

Dr Benazir praised the efforts of the frontline police officials during the ongoing coronavirus crisis of the country.

He said, "What the police have done for the welfare and protection of the people in the last three months is truly unprecedented. The people have also repaid the police as well."

"The police have gained immense trust, respect and confidence of the people, and people have given the police a place in their hearts."

"The dignity, the respect that people have given to the police cannot be bought with any amount of money," he added.

Dr Benazir said that the Bangladesh Police will not roll back its steps from what it has achieved in the last three months. The Bangladesh Police will move forward as the police of the people with the trust and confidence of the people, said the release.

The IGP said the police should not oppress the common people. The police must solve any problem through the legal capacity of the country and moral values rather than use brute physical force.

During the video conference, the IGP also said that steps will be taken outside the current welfare system to ensure medical facilities, children's education, housing and post-retirement welfare facilities for police officers and members of the force.

Dr Benazir said that the OCs of 660 police stations of the country are the faces that represent the Bangladesh Police, and the image of the force depends on them.

The IGP during his speech paid respect to the 46 martyred policemen who sacrificed their lives during the coronavirus pandemic. He expressed his sincere condolences to the bereaved families. The IGP reiterated his commitment to stand beside the families who have lost their breadwinners.
