Martyr Mugdho’s family files complaint with ICT
Mugdho’s brother Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation, filed the complaint
A complaint has been filed with the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) over the killing of Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho during last year's mass uprising, which ousted the Awami League government and ended its 15-year autocratic rule.
Mughdho's brother Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the July Shaheed Smriti Foundation, filed the complaint with the tribunal's Chief Prosecutor's Office on behalf of his family today (16 January).
Following the filing of the complaint, Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho said he filed the complaint without naming any individuals.
He emphasised the tribunal's role in identifying and prosecuting the actual offenders and their accomplices through thorough investigation.
Snigdho expressed confidence in the government and tribunal to deliver justice.
He highlighted the crucial role of evidence in the trial process.
"Although evidence collection is primarily the administration's responsibility, we have gathered some evidence ourselves to avoid delays or obstacles in the pursuit of justice. We hope forensic experts will swiftly identify the real culprits, and our efforts in collecting evidence can expedite their work."
He also recounted the tragic events of 18 July, saying, "When he [Mughdho] was rushed to the hospital after being shot, the doctors on duty declared him dead. They urged us to take the body away quickly, fearing the police might intervene and take it away."
Snigdho further explained the difficulties encountered in obtaining a no-objection letter from the police station to proceed with the burial.
Mughdho was fatally shot by police in Uttara's Azampur area during protests on 18 July 2024.
A video of Mugdho running amid the violence surrounding the quota reform movement, just 15 minutes before he was fatally shot on July 18 in Uttara, went viral on social media.
Mugdho's last words, "Paani lagbe, paani" (Do you need water?), were uttered while he distributed water bottles to protesters during the intense clashes that day.
Mughdo's death is remembered as an important event in the quota reform movement.
Mugdho was born in Uttara, Dhaka, in 1998. After completing his HSC at Uttara High School and College, he enrolled at Khulna University in 2019. After completing his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Khulna University in 2023, he was pursuing an MBA at BUP.
His family's village home is in Brahmanbaria. Among his three brothers, he was a twin to Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho.
