Nagorik Committee expels member over attack on ethnic minority protesters
The expulsion came after Wednesday’s attack on the ethnic minority students and activists who had gathered outside the NCTB office to protest the exclusion of the image of a graffiti with the term “Adivasi” (indigenous) on it from a textbook
The Jatiya Nagorik Committee has expelled Shahadat Farazi Sakib, a member of its Dhanmondi Thana committee, following accusations of involvement in an attack on ethnic minority demonstrators outside the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) office in Dhaka on Wednesday.
In a dismissal letter issued on Thursday, the organisation says Sakib violated the organisation's code of discipline and principles.
It reads, "As per the rules and principles of the Jatiya Nagorik Committee, your recent activities have been found to breach the organisation's discipline and ideals. In light of these allegations, and to maintain organisational integrity, the committee, following approval from Convener Nasiruddin Patwari and Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, has decided to expel you."
The decision came into effect immediately, it added.
The expulsion came after Wednesday's attack on the ethnic minority students and activists who had gathered outside the NCTB office to protest the exclusion of the image of a graffiti with the term "Adivasi" (indigenous) on it from a textbook.
According to witnesses, the attack was carried out by members of the "Students for Sovereignty" group. Sakib was reportedly present at the scene and shared posts on social media in support of the group.
