So how are the prices in countries closer to Bangladesh?
In Bangladesh, the price of a dozen eggs typically ranges from Tk120 to Tk140, while broiler chickens range from Tk185 to Tk190 per kg, depending on the region and market conditions.
The prices may seem reasonable, but keep in mind that the per capita income (PCI) of Bangladesh is $2,700, or around Tk3 lakh, with the widening wealth gap skewing the gap.

India faring better
Right across the border in India, prices for a dozen eggs vary by state and market. In Bangladeshi taka, it comes to around Tk60 to Tk84 per dozen.
Broiler chickens, meanwhile, go from Tk495 to Tk580.
India's PCI is $2,940, which is around Tk3.6 lakh.
Pakistan sees pricier chickens
Elsewhere in Pakistan, inflation has seen egg prices shoot up to Tk157 per dozen, with broiler chickens going for Tk330 to Tk360.
Pakistan's PCI is $1,587, which amounts to Tk2 lakh.
Sri Lanka's income per head blunts blow
In Sri Lanka, the price of a dozen eggs varies.
Online shops show the price range to be between Tk192 to Tk245 per dozen.
However, Sri Lanka's PCI in 2024 was $4,120, which amounts to a little over Tk5 Lakh
Now what about across the seas?
US sees high prices
Egg prices have surged in the US due to avian influenza outbreaks.
As of January 2025, wholesale prices for a dozen large eggs were reported at $7.24 in New York, $6.84 in the Midwest, and $8.35 in California.
Converting to taka, these prices are approximately Tk796, Tk752, and Tk919 per dozen, respectively.
Despite the high prices, it's important to note that the PCI of the US is over $86,000, which amounts to Tk10.7 crore.
UK still ok
The UK is suffering from supply issues for their eggs.
While specific current prices are not detailed in the available sources, historical data indicates that prices can range from £3.10 to £4.60 per dozen, which equates to approximately Tk 470 to Tk 698 per dozen. The PCI of the UK amounts to $52000, which results in a taka valuation of Tk6.5 crore.
