As the demolition of Bangabandhu Bhaban was taking place on Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka, around 10:30pm last night (5 February), murals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his youngest son, Sheikh Russel, were vandalised in front of two dormitories named after them at the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) in Raozan.
A viral video on social media shows agitated students marching out of their dormitories and gathering on campus. Some students used hammers to destroy the mural of Bangabandhu. Simultaneously, they tore down the signboard of Bangabandhu Hall and set it on fire.
During the incident, the protesting students were heard chanting slogans, including "Naraye Takbir, Allahu Akbar" and "Mujibbad-er Kobor De."
Additionally, the mural in front of Sheikh Russel Hall was also vandalised. The students announced that Sheikh Russel Hall would be renamed "Shahid Abu Sayeed Hall." They also declared their intention to rename Bangabandhu Hall but said that the new name would be announced later.
Attempts to contact CUET's Student Welfare Advisor, Professor Dr Mohammad Mahbubul Alam, for a statement went unanswered.
