Dr Kathok Das, a 40-year-old ophthalmologist, has been placed on a two-day remand after being arrested from the Dhaka airport in connection with a sedition case filed over the desecration of the national flag in Chattogram's New Market area.
The Additional Metropolitan Magistrate of Chattogram, Hasan Shahriar, passed the order after Chattogram police produced him in the court seeking a 10-day remand.
"The court granted a two-day remand and ordered him to be sent to jail after questioning," Advocate Md Raihanul Wazed Chowdhury, assistant public prosecutor of Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, told The Business Standard today (6 January).
"He has been shown arrested in the sedition case. This morning, we presented him before the court, seeking a 10-day remand for questioning," Abdul Karim, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chattogram Kotwali Police Station, said.
The arrested doctor is an accused in the sedition case filed with the station against 19 individuals, including expelled ISKCON leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, on 30 November 2024.
Dr Das is a micro, laser, and phaco surgeon at Lions Charitable Eye Hospital and a consultant at Bangladesh Eye Hospital.
He was detained at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on Wednesday (5 February) night while attempting to board a flight to the United Kingdom, said OC Karim.
Immigration police stopped him and later handed him over to the Airport Police Station, from where he was transferred to Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram.
