Chattogram transport strike called off
An indefinite strike called by a faction of Chattogram-based transport owners’ association has been called off at afternoon today.
Manjurul Rahman Manju, convener of the transport owners association made the announcement at 4.30pm after a meeting with Chattogram City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin.
Earlier in the day, Chattogram Divisional Public and Goods Transport Owners’ Association enforced the strike to press home their nine-point demand causing sufferings to passengers.
Road communication with adjacent districts, including Cumilla, Feni, Noakhali, Cox’s Bazar and three hill districts – Khagrachhari, Rangamati and Bandarban – remained nearly suspended since 6am today following the strike.
On Wednesday, the association had threatened to go on an indefinite strike unless the authorities concerned take steps to stop harassment and extortion by law enforcers within three days.

The transport owners’ other demands included cancellation of extra fines by Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, application of different sections of consumer rights laws by the district executive magistrate, no harassment by the BRTA for updating documents of vehicles, no fines for updating documents, and no confiscation and requisition of vehicles by Highway Police.
