‘Birth registration in Cox’s Bazar to restart soon’

The server meant for birth registration in Cox's Bazar will be reactivated soon, said Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the district Md Kamal Hossain.
The DC said this at a meeting with local public representatives in the district on Thursday.
"Considering local people's sufferings because of the server shutdown, letters have been sent to officials concerned, including the secretary of local government division, with a request to reopen it as soon as possible," the DC said.

Hopefully, the server will be reactivated soon, he added.

In the face of Rohingya influx in 2017, the government centrally deactivated birth registration servers in three hill districts, including Cox's Bazar, in August 25 that year, resulting in immense sufferings for local people.
The decision was taken in a bid to prevent Rohingyas from obtaining Bangladeshi passports and National IDs.
The DC, however, opined issuance of passports or national ID cards to Rohingyas could not be stopped by shutting down the servers.
He held responsible a section of local public representatives and local government offices for this.
The DC urged the public representatives to provide birth certificate after proper scrutiny.
Despite closing down the servers, some corrupt public representatives and greedy IT experts continued to provide Rohingyas with voter IDs and birth certificates, said relevant sources.
Deputy Director of Local Government Division Srabosti Roy, Superintendent of Police Masud Hossain, Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) M Shamsuddoha, Additional District Magistrate Shahjahan Ali, Cox's Bazar Municipality Mayor Mujibur Rahman, Ukhia Upazila Parishad Chairman Hamidul Haque Chowdhury, Teknaf Upazila Chairman Nurul Alam, Ukhia Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nikarujjaman Chowdhury, Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rabiul Hassan, Officer in Charge of Teknaf police station Pradip Kumar Das, Officer-in-Charge of Ukhia Police Station Abul Mansur were also present at the meeting.
The meeting also discussed different issues regarding Rohingya refugee camps, law and order situation in Ukhia and Teknaf.
