Campaign in Khatunganj to stop onion price hike

The Chattogram district administration has launched a campaign in Khatunganj, the country's largest wholesale market, to curb the rise in onion prices.
Two of its executive magistrates – Shirin Akhter and Omar Faruk – led the operation, which lasted from midday to 3pm on Sunday, said a press release.
During the operation of the mobile court, 10 storekeepers were fined a total of Tk77,000 as they increased the price at their own discretion without keeping the purchase invoice.

Omar said the market had seen an increase in onion prices by Tk20 per kg over the past few days.
"Warehouse keepers were making profit by fixing the price with importers over a phone call without keeping the business documents with them," he added.
Shirin said the sudden rise in onion prices in the wholesale market was having an impact on the retail market. As a result, the onion market was becoming unstable from both sides.
"Regular campaigns will be conducted in the wholesale and retail markets so that the price of onion does not go up," she added.
