More than 2,000 daily cases recorded over 3 consecutive days in Bangladesh

More than 2,000 people in Bangladesh have tested positive for Covid-19, daily, for the last three consecutive days.

According to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 2,111 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours till Wednesday 8am.

Previously, 2,212 new Covid-19 patients were reported on 17 November and 2,139 on 16 November.

The number of novel coronavirus cases in the country now stands at 4,38,795.

Prof Dr Be-Nazir Ahmed, former director of Communicable Disease Control at DGHS, told the Business Standard that the Health Services Division needs to change its approach to control the spread of the virus as Covid-19 infections are on the rise.

He said, "Emphasis is being placed on administrative and curative issues such as appointing mobile courts to ensure that people wear masks and prepare hospitals to deal with Covid-19. But preventive measures are being neglected."

"In order to deal with public health problems, emphasis should be placed on preventive measures like isolation and quarantine," he added.

Bangladesh logged 21 more deaths from the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours. The country's death toll from the virus now stands at 6,275.

The latest day's infection rate was 12.82% of the total tests. The overall infection rate in the country to date was 16.95% and the death rate was 1.43%.

Among the latest victims of the virus, 14 were men and seven were women. All of them died in different hospitals across the country.

Thirteen of the deceased patients hailed from Dhaka, three from Chattogram, one each from the Rajshahi, Rangpur and Barishal divisions, and two from Khulna.

Meanwhile, 16,469 samples were tested in 117 labs across the country in the past 24 hours. A total of 25,89,421 samples have been tested in the country so far.

Also, 1,893 patients were declared free of Covid-19 during the same period, raising the total number of recoveries to 3,54,788 with an 80.86% recovery rate.

The gender breakdown of Covid-19 victims shows that 4,827 of the total deceased were men and 1,448 were women.

In the last 24 hours, 1,223 people have been placed in quarantine. Now, 39,399 people are in quarantine across the country, read the press release.

The country's first cases were reported on 8 March this year and the first death from the virus was reported on 18 March.
