We’ve started work to rid Dhaka people of waterlogging: Taposh

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has said they have started work on recovering all canals in the city corporation area to rid the city dwellers of the perennial waterlogging problem.

The canals and other water reservoirs in Dhaka city have come under the authority of the city corporations after 32 years, he mentioned, adding, "It is our responsibility to free the people of Dhaka from waterlogging. So, we have started our activities from Tuesday," he said.

Taposh continued, "We have taken measures to recover 11 canals in the DSCC area and clean those which have been blocked by waste.

"We are also trying to create an aesthetic environment there. It will help to create a recreational environment where our children and Dhaka residents can roam around walking or riding bicycles."

While addressing the first phase of the annual general meeting of the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Dhaka City Unit on Wednesday, the DSCC mayor also said an action plan is being implemented to keep the mosquito control activities operational round-the-year.

Thanks to the initiative, no deaths from dengue have been reported this year, added Taposh.

A cheque for Tk12 lakh was handed over from Madhumati Bank Limited's Social Responsibility fund to expedite the activities of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society Dhaka City Unit.

As the Red Crescent Society stands by the people in disasters and problems, the DSCC mayor said that it was the best place to donate.

DNCC mobile courts in Badda to ensure wearing mask

Meanwhile, three executive magistrates of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Tajwar Akram Sakapi Ibn Sajjad, Persia Sultana Priyanka and Md Rifat Ferdous led three separate mobile courts in Gulshan-Badda Link Road area on Wednesday afternoon to ensure wearing masks to battle the second wave of the novel coronavirus.

During the drives, pedestrians, and buyers and sellers in markets, rickshaw pullers and public transport drivers and passengers were made aware of the compulsory wearing of facemasks.

Besides, free masks were distributed among the impoverished people.

Moreover, a fine of Tk12,450 has been imposed in 17 cases by enforcing the Penal Code and Communicable Disease (Prevention, Control and Eradication) Act, 2018, through the mobile courts.

The mobile court drive of the DNCC to ensure the wearing of the mask will continue, said a press release.
