UGC recommends uniform act for public universities
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recommended introducing uniform act for running the public universities.
The UGC said this in its 46th annual report submitted to the President on Sunday.
Four universities - Dhaka University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University and Jahangirnagar University- will be out of the new law as these are running under the 1973 Ordinance.
UGC Chairman Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah along with other members met the President at Bangabhaban and submitted the report on Sunday night.
Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah told The Business Standard that the uniform act will help in operating the universities smoothly.
There are 46 public universities and 106 private universities in the country.
The UGC made a total of 24 recommendations in the annual report.
The UGC report also recommended uniform admission for the private universities like the public universities.
The uniform test will save times and reduce hassle of the admission aspirants and their guardians, the report said.
Sheikh Kabir Hossain, chairman of the Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh (APUB), hailed the recommendation of the UGC saying that it will be good for private universities.
The UGC recommended formulating specific policy to stop plagiarism, saying that the incidences of plagiarism are tarnishing the country's image in the world.
It also recommended to modify the existing private university act, to introduce a policy for ensuring admission of three percent freedom fighters' children and three percent poor students free of cost, to introduce policy for the admission of foreign students, to set up University Teachers Training Academy for making skilled teachers, Central Research Laboratory and National Research Council.
