Around 11,000 foreigners living illegally in Bangladesh: Home Minister
Illegal immigrants from some countries, including Africa, are living illegally here with expired visas.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Thursday said almost 11,000 foreigners are living illegally in Bangladesh.
He told the reporters after a Cabinet committee meeting on law and order today.
"Most of the Illegal immigrants are from African countries including Nigeria, Tanzania who are living illegally here with expired visas," the minister added, reports Somoy TV.
"These illegal foreigners are involved in different crimes while some of them are in prison," he said.
Although their passports expired, they never tried to return home. Even the embassies of their respective countries in Dhaka did not respond when the authorities concerned contacted them to discuss the issue. That is why the government has taken an initiative to send them back to their respective countries, he added.
Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque, also the president of the cabinet committee on law and order, echoed the Home Minister's remark, saying, "Our intelligence agencies have worked successfully to identify the illegal foreigners."
