Man held for blackmailing people on Facebook
Police said, after continuing conversations for a few days, Ershad started demanding money from his, victims showing screenshots of their chat history
Police arrested a man who reportedly extorted money from many people, threatening them with making private photos go viral on social media.
The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Ershad Mia on Friday and seized three mobile sets which he used to blackmail his victims.
Mahidul Islam, additional deputy commissioner of DB told The Business Standard they (police) received eight complaints from victims who were blackmailed by this person.
Police arrested Ershad in a case filed against him with Hatirjheel police station by a victim named Gopal Chandho Sarker, added the police official.
Police said using photographs of beautiful girls, Ershad created a fake Facebook account named 'Dream Girl,' with which he targeted people over 50 years in age and extorted money with promises of love and sex.
When the targets accepted his friend request, Ershad Mia started chatting with them and sent nude photos.
During conversations, he also used software to sound like a girl.
Police said, after continuing conversations for a few days, Ershad started demanding money from his, victims showing screenshots of their chat history.
He also threatened them saying, "If you don't give money I will demolish your image by uploading these conversations and photos on social media."
In this way, Ershad Mia extorted around Tk3 lakh from 20 people over the last four months, police said.
