Former JCD leader shot in Ctg ‘gunfight’
A former leader of pro-BNP student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal was injured in a 'gunfight' with police in Chattogram, early Thursday.
The incident took place at about 1:40am on Thursday on the Asian Highway Link Road in the Bayazid Bostami area of the port city.
Police say Saiful Islam, 32, was a listed terrorist and accused in 18 cases.
However, family members of Saiful say a police informant by the name of Akash called Saiful, asking him to come out of his home on Wednesday night. Saiful was found shot in the leg, only hours after that.
Md Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Bayezid Bostami police station told The Business Standard, "Saiful and some of his gang members opened fire, targeting police at a temporary police outpost near the Asian Women University gate. Police also opened fire in retaliation and later arrested Saiful from the spot."
"Three sub-inspectors of the police station were also injured during the gunfight," Kamruzzaman said, adding that one firearm and three bullets were seized from Saiful.
However, Saiful's mother Sanoara Begum said, "A police informant named Akash called Saiful at about 10pm on Wednesday, asking to meet with him. Saiful left home to meet Akash, but we came to know three hours later that Saiful was arrested by the police. Finally, we found Saiful in Chittagong Medical College Hospital at 4:00am on Thursday with serious bullet injuries to his leg.
However, OC Kamruzzaman says they have no informant named Akash.
Gazi Siraj, former president of Chhatra Dal of Chattogram City unit, said, "It's a clear violation of human rights. We are preparing to file a case against policemen involved in this crime."
