Wasa’s duty to cut 68 sewerage lines linked to Buriganga: High Court
The High Court directed Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority to stop any other lines connected to the river
The High Court has said it is the responsibility of the Dhaka Water and Sewerage Supply Authority (Wasa) to disconnect its 68 sewerage lines linked to the Buriganga River - a lifeline of the capital.
The court directed the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) to also stop any other lines connected to the river and submit a report to the court by January 7.
Justice Gobinda Chandra Thakur and Justice Mohammad Ullah yesterday ordered the BIWTA to submit the report as an affidavit.

Following the High Court order, petitioner's lawyer Manzill Murshid said, according to the BIWTA report 68 sewerage lines are now connected to the Buriganga. The Wasa has to disconnect the lines as the concerned authority, he added.
Meanwhile, the Wasa has withdrawn its affidavit claiming that it has no sewerage line connected to the river. It will submit a fresh affidavit to the court by Sunday. The High Court the same day will deliver its decision according to the new report.
Upon a writ petition by the Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh, the High Court in 2011 ordered the authorities to remove all establishments built illegally on the Buriganga banks.
