Countrywide drive on to free small rivers, canals
The drive has started simultaneously in all the districts
The government on Monday embarked on a programme to free small rivers, canals and other water bodies across the country from all illegal structures.
Under the project, around 44,000 illegal structures will be demolished in all 64 districts of the country.
The drive has started simultaneously in all the districts.
In Dhaka, the authorities started a drive at Ramchandrapur canal in the capital's Mohammadpur area.
Kabir Bin Anwar, secretary to the water resources ministry, inaugurated the drive around 12pm.
The Ministry of Water Resources is supervising the drive under the re-excavation project of small rivers, canals and water bodies in 64 districts of the country (first phase).
"It will not be possible to clear the whole area of the canal. But we will try to cover as much area as possible," said Kabir.
He added that the Ramchandrapur canal has originated from the Shitalakshya River.
