UNHCR to develop the capacity of local journalists
UNHCR has been working in partnership with Coastal Association for Social Transformation (COAST) Trust for this purpose
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has taken initiative to develop the capacity of local journalists in publishing neutral news on Rohingya issue based on facts and findings, said the UNHCR official Subrata Kumar Chakrabarty on Sunday.
Subrata Kumar, officer of the 'Livelihood' program under UNHCR said they have been working in partnership with Coastal Association for Social Transformation (COAST) Trust for this purpose.
"Apart from supporting the local people who are affected by the influx of Rohingya people, we want to work for the journalists. Already, initiatives have been taken up in this regard," he added.

The UNHCR official made the remarks while speaking at the concluding ceremony of a two-day workshop for online journalists in Lighthouse area of Cox's Bazar organised by the COAST Trust.
"The readership and acceptance of online news have increased in recent times. For this, news has to be circulated carefully so that no wrong information is disseminated. A wrong news can have many negative effects on society," Subrata said.
"Local people have a misconception about the role of Non-Governmental Organisations' (NGO) standpoint with regard to the relocation of the Rohingya people," said he.
Disaster Management Specialist Gauhar Naim Wara, COAST Trust assistant directors Barkat Ullah Maruf and Mojibul Huque Munir were the resource parsons in the workshop assisted by UNHCR.
Coast Trust's Team Leader Jahangir Alam conducted the workshop in which 30 journalists participated.
