Death-row convict and ex-HuJI member Enamul arrested
The Rapid Action Battalion arrested one of the death row convicts in a case over the assassination attempt on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Kotalipara of Gopalganj in 2000.
Fugitive accused Sheikh Md Enamul Haque had gone into hiding and began using different aliases. The RAB arrested him on Saturday from the capital's Uttara area.
At a press briefing on Sunday, Khandaker Al Moin, commander of the RAB's legal and media wing, said Enamul was working as a homoeopathy doctor by hiding his identity for a long time.
He also worked as an imam at a Gazipur mosque and as a lecturer in a homoeopathy college there for two years.
The RAB official informed that Enamul established close relations with the chief of the banned militant outfit HuJI and the mastermind of the 21 August grenade attack Mufti Abdul Hannan.
In 2000, Enamul, along with Anis, the younger brother of Mufti Hannan, set up the Sonar Bangla Chemical Factory at the BSCIC industrial area in Gopalganj town.
Enamul and Anis used to collect explosives and various bomb-making components in that factory in the name of making chemicals for soap. They planted two powerful bombs weighing 76 kilogrammes near the public meeting of Sheikh Hasina at Kotalipara.
The RAB said three cases were filed over the assassination attempt, murder conspiracy and explosives control act against Enamul and his militant cohorts in 2000 with the Kotalipara police station.
On 23 March 2021, Enamul Haque alias Enamul Karim, along with 13 others, were sentenced to death.
