1,100 accused in case filed over workers-police clash in Dinajpur

Police on Thursday filed a case against 1,100 people over a clash between the law enforcers and the workers of Rupali Bangla Jute Mill in Birol upazila of Dinajpur.

Besides, the district administration and the police formed two separate investigation committees to probe the incident. 

The police-formed panel will submit its report within the next seven days, said Superintendent of Police in Dinajpur Anwar Hossain.

On Wednesday night, the workers of the jute mill staged a protest and vandalised the mill in demand of arrears. 

A clash broke out between the workers and the police officials after the cops tried to pacify the agitating workers. 

At one stage, police opened fire on the workers, leaving one worker named Surat Ali dead and 10 other workers injured.

Sheikh Nasim Habib, officer-in-charge of Birol police station, said three policemen were also injured in the clash.
 
Abdul Kader, sub-inspector of the police station filed a case accusing 12 named and 1,100 unknown ones over the clash.

Abdul Kader said police are collecting the names and addresses of all who were involved in the clash. However, no complaint was lodged on behalf of the deceased or the other workers.
 
The deceased's body was sent to the M Abdur Rahim Medical College in Dinajpur after filing a case of unnatural death, he added.

The three-member probe committee formed by police is headed by Additional Superintendent of Police of the District Special Branch Sachin Chakma. Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar) Hafizul Islam and Officer-in-Charge of the district's Detective Branch ATM Golam Rasul are the two other members of the committee.

Meanwhile, Additional District Magistrate Shariful Islam is leading the two-member committee formed by the district administration and Birol Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zinat Rahman is its member.
