A medical technologist’s solo fight against Covid-19
Bibhuti Bhushan collected samples of 283 corona suspects and 16 of them tested corona positive
A frontline medical technologist in Barishal has been collecting coronavirus samples every day from suspected patients where his colleagues refused to do so fearing infection.
Earlier on March 29, coronavirus sample testing started at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital, the only coronavirus testing laboratory in Barishal division.
Five medical technologists of the hospital were enlisted for taking samples. But four of them managed to remove their names from the list, showing excuses.
Bibhuti Bhushan Haldar, 30, however, refused to back down and shouldered the responsibility alone.
He has since been collecting samples every day from patients who have died of Covid-19 or have shown symptoms and were suspected of having it.
Despite knowing the risk, Bibhuti Bhushan has collected samples of 283 corona suspects from different places including the corona unit of the hospital. Sixteen of them tested corona positive as of Monday.
Bibhuti Bhushan isolated himself from his family as he had decided not to go home since March 29 because of the risky work.
For now, Bibhuti Bhushan has been staying in Barisal city's Hotel Sedona International.
Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital and the Directorate General of Health Services top officials have described Bibhuti Bhushan as a "Hero of The Corona War."
Recognising his courage, Barisal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Shahabuddin Khan sent him Tk5,000, two sets of gloves and masks, one personal protection equipment and one basket of fruits.
"He is a frontline fighter. So small gifts have been sent to encourage him," said Shahabuddin Khan.
Also, Barishal Deputy Commissioner SM Ajior Rahman sent him the same token of appreciation.
Bibhuti Bhushan said over the phone that he knew he had to take up the work when his colleagues refused, and the risk of getting infected is always there as he is collecting samples all day and night.
"Any gift brings joy. So the police commissioner's and deputy commissioner's gifts will encourage me to do more. I also urged all to come forward from their respective positions to prevent the spread of coronavirus without panicking at this critical time."
Bibhuti Bhushan joined Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital as a medical technologist nine years ago.
