Investigators today (28 May) have found some body parts in a septic tank at Sanjeeva Gardens in Kolkata, which they suspect could be of MP Anwarul Azim Anar.
An official from the three-member team of Detective Branch (DB) staying in Kolkata confirmed this to The Business Standard.
According to Kolkata police, MP Azim was murdered in a flat of Sanjeeva Garden, a high-end luxury condominium in Kolkata's New Town, and his blood-soaked clothes were recovered from this apartment.
The lawmaker went missing on 13 May after leaving for India reportedly for treatment the day before.
This evening, Indian news channel NDTV quoted DB Chief Harun-or-Rashid as saying that officials have got circumstantial evidence, and a further inspection would now take place into the sewage line which is connected to the duplex flat where the murder occurred.
"We inspected the sewage line which is connected with that duplex flat with the help of West Bengal CID. We took help from CID to break the whole sewage line. We are already interrogating the accused butcher at the West Bengal CID headquarters," Harun-or-Rashid said.
The recovered flesh, skin and hairs weigh around 5kgs and they have been sent for forensic test to assess whether the body is MP Azim's or not, he added.
The DB chief also said they are collaborating with the Interpol and the West Bengal CID to intensify efforts to apprehend the prime suspect, Akhtaruzzaman Shahin, who officials think could have escaped to the United States via Dubai from Nepal's Kathmandu.
Letters have been sent to the US authorities through Interpol in this regard.
An official close to the investigation told TBS, "The letters mentioned that Aktaruzzaman Shahin is the suspected mastermind and believed to have gone to the US. According to the Indian letters, authorities have been requested to deport him back to India, as the murder took place in Kolkata."
The DB team went to Kolkata on 26 May to investigate the murder of Anwarul Azim.
They conducted a search operation at Bagdoba Canal, which is around 7-8 kilometres away from Sanjeeva Gardens, the spot of the murder.
Both countries' police launched a rescue operation of the body parts at the Bagdoba canal after Jihad Hawlader, the arrested butcher, said some flesh parts of the body were thrown into that water body.
On Tuesday, the police also launched a drive at the Hatigola portion of the Krishanagar canal, where MP Azim's skull and bones were thrown away by another suspect, Faisal alias Faijul, who is still on the run.
