5 die of electrocution during Rathjatra in Bogura
34 people are currently under treatment at the hospital
At least five people died and 30 others sustained injuries after being electrocuted during the Rathjatra, one of the major festivals of the Hindu community, in Bogura.
"The incident took place in the Seujgari Amtala area of the district town today (7 July) around 5:30pm," Bogura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shaihan Waliullah told The Business Standard.
Five deceased were identified as Alok, Atashi, Naresh, Ranjita and Jolly Rani.
According to locals, the Rathjatra started from Seujgari Iskcon temple at 5pm. On the way, the metallic dome of the Rath carriage came into contact with a high-voltage overhead electric wire in the Seujgari Amtala intersection and caught fire.
At least 25-30 people, including those on the Rath and others in the procession, sustained injuries. Five of them succumbed to their injuries after being taken to Bogura Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
Two critically injured were shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital.
