The last batch of 26 Bangladeshi expatriates, who were jailed by the United Arab Emirates for protesting against the Sheikh Hasina-led government in July, have returned to Bangladesh today (13 September).
An Indigo Airlines flight, carrying the expatriates, landed in Bangladesh at 3:05pm in the afternoon, a press statement issued by the Brac Migration Program reads.
With the latest addition, all 57 jailed expatriates, who were pardoned by the UAE government earlier this month, have returned home.
Previously, 31 of the expats were brought back to the country on different flights. The first group of 14 expats arrived on 7 September.
Shariful Hasan, associate director of BRAC's Migration Program and Youth Platform, said, "These workers who have returned to the country have been given urgent assistance including transportation costs from our BRAC Migration Program through the Expatriate Welfare Desk."
"The Expatriate Welfare Ministry's Wage Earners Welfare Board and BRAC will work for the economic and social reintegration of these expatriates. For this, psychological-social and economic support will be provided as per their needs."
Meanwhile, BRAC yesterday launched a specialised career counselling service programme, co-funded by the European Union, for repatriated Bangladeshis under its Prottasha-II project.
The services are expected to help returnees find jobs or start their own businesses.
