RMG workers in N'ganj stage demo demanding allowances
About 200 workers of IFS Texwear blocked the intersection around 2:30pm
Ready-made garment (RMG) workers from a factory in Narayanganj today (20 October) blocked the Chashara intersection demanding benefits such as annual leave, tiffin and night shift allowances.
About 200 workers of IFS Texwear blocked the intersection around 2:30pm, disrupting traffic on the highway connecting Narayanganj to Dhaka, Munshiganj, and Chattogram, Narayanganj Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazrul Islam said.
"Both police and army personnel arrived at the location. Following discussions with the factory management, they assured the workers of resolving the issue. Subsequently, the workers decided to lift the blockade after 30 minutes," the OC added.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, an official of the factory, told The Business Standard all workers' salaries are up-to-date. However, some people may have incited the workers to stage the protest today.
"If any worker has outstanding bills, they will certainly be paid," the official said.
