The Bangladesh Bank has set a limit on the fee of income tax payment through any type of bank card, internet banking and mobile banking services (MFS).
In a circular issued today (13 November), it said from now on if income tax is paid through cards, MFS or internet banking, customers will be charged Tk20 for transactions up to Tk25,000 and a maximum of Tk50 for transactions of more than Tk25,000.
If the transaction is done using an MFS or PSP wallet, the customer can be charged 1% per transaction or a maximum of Tk30, which includes the value added tax.
Earlier, the charge was 1.6% of the total amount paid.
On 27 October, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) sent a letter to Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur stating that high fees being deducted for income tax payment through card, internet banking and MFS/PSP resulted in hurdles for taxpayers.
It requested that steps be taken to reduce this fee.
Husne Ara Shikha, spokesperson and executive director of Bangladesh Bank said, "In view of NBR's request, new instructions have been given today, so that customers' costs will be reduced a little."
The NBR opened the online return filing system for taxpayers from 9 September to facilitate return filing and tax compliance for the current tax year 2024-25.
Speaking to the media yesterday, NBR Chairman MD Abdur Rahman said, "The fee is high for online payment of income tax. We have requested the governor of Bangladesh Bank to reduce it to Tk20."
