Berklee Indian Ensemble’s debut album, featuring Armeen Musa, nominated for Grammy
Berklee Indian Ensemble's debut album 'Shuruaat', which featured Armeen Musa's song 'Jaago Piya', was nominated for the 65th Annual Grammy Awards for 'Best Global Music Album' on Tuesday, 15 November.
Armeen, who is a Berklee College of Music alum and a member of the vibrant Berklee Indian Ensemble, voiced the track Jaago Piya in 2016. The song was written by her mother, popular Nazrul singer Nashid Kamal. Armeen-Nashid's presence in Shuruaat makes them the first Bangladeshis ever to be nominated for a Grammy.
Shuruaat is Berklee Indian Ensemble's debut album, which was released in July of this year. The album is a compilation of 10 of the ensemble's original songs.
Other nominees include 'Love, Damini' by Burna Roy, 'Queen of Sheba' by Angleique Kidjo and Ibrahim Maalouf, 'Between US… (Live)' by Anoushka Sharma, Metropole Orkest and Jules Buckley and 'Sakura' by Masa Takumi.
Berklee Indian Ensemble was founded in 2011 by Annette Philip, the first Indian musician appointed as a faculty member at Berklee College of Music. The Ensemble transitioned into a professional band in 2021.
The ensemble is composed of 11 full-time members representing Bangladesh, India, Jordan, Iraq, Israel, Nigeria, Indonesia, Norway, the USA and other regions across the globe.
