'Call of Duty' sets record, earning over $3B in a year
Call of Duty: Mobile remains a high driver of player engagement
It's been another bumper year for Call of Duty as the sharp-shooting series has earned Activision a load of money in 2020. Video game publisher Activision Blizzard revealed on Friday that the Call of Duty franchise has set a new record by surpassing $3 billion in net bookings over the last 12 months, reports Hollywood Reporter.
This milestone was reached thanks to the November release of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, which is available on the Xbox Series X/S and the PlayStation 5, as well as the continued success of Modern Warfare and Warzone, the free-to-play online game that has surpassed 85 million players since its launch in March.
Call of Duty: Mobile remains a high driver of player engagement, with Activision sharing in its third-quarter report that the title was the highest-grossing game in U.S. app stores since last October.
This year alone, the Santa Monica-based publisher noted that 200 million people played Call of Duty. Activision further noted that year-to-date increases include net bookings up over 80 percent, while units sold through are up 40 percent year-over-year.
