Prabir Mitra: Once a Nawab, now a memory
Known for seamlessly immersing himself into any character, the veteran actor passed away on 5 January, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable performances
Just after Bangladesh's independence, Prabir Mitra played the lead role in 'Rongin Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah', directed by Pradip Dey. His flawless portrayal brought the historical figure to life, so much so that audiences saw the shadow of the Nawab in him.
Known for seamlessly immersing himself into any character, the veteran actor passed away on 5 January, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable performances.
For the last 16 years, Prabir Mitra suffered from severe knee injuries, which impacted his mobility. On 6 January, he was laid to rest at Azimpur Cemetery following funeral prayers at the 'Bangladesh Film Development Corporation' and 'Channel i' premises.
Mitra's first film was 'Jibon Trishna', where he shared the screen with Kohinoor Akhter Shuchanda as siblings. Recalling their early days, Suchanda noted, "We shared a bond of siblings that extended beyond the film arena. Over the years, we acted together in nearly 20 films, forming a cherished partnership."
Despite his enduring popularity among both audiences and colleagues, Mitra led a simple life, free from ambition, which kept him grounded. His reserved personality and acceptance of life's realities distanced him from the film industry in his later years.
Actor Abul Hayat, who frequently worked with Mitra in TV dramas, admired his calm demeanour and extraordinary voice. "We first met in 1971. He had a unique personality and a gentle nature. Our time working together in 'Titash Ekti Nodir Naam' left me with fond memories," Hayat reminisced.
Among his many acclaimed films, 'Noyoner Alo', directed by Belal Ahmed was considered a defining moment in his career. He won the National Film Award for 'Boro Bhalo Lok Chhilo', directed by Mohiuddin.
Over the years, Mitra starred in iconic films like 'Chabuk', 'Titash Ekti Nodir Naam', 'Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah', and 'Boro Bhalo Lok Chhilo'. Appearing in the song 'E Adhaar Konodin Jabe Na Mite Amar Prithibi Theke' from Jibon Trishna brought him widespread recognition.
In 2018, he was honoured with a 'Lifetime Achievement Award' for his contribution to Bangladeshi cinema, alongside numerous accolades such as the Producers' Association Award, Zahidur Rahman Film Award, and Mother Teresa Memorial Medal.
Prabir Mitra's legacy will endure through his timeless performances and the respect he garnered in the industry.
