Amad Diallo’s late brilliance seals dramatic Manchester derby win for United
City's slump continues with just one win in their last 11 matches, adding to Guardiola’s mounting woes.
Amad Diallo delivered a moment of magic in the dying minutes to secure a stunning 2-1 comeback victory for Manchester United over Manchester City on 15 December, prolonging Pep Guardiola's nightmare run with his struggling side.
City had taken the lead in the first half through Josko Gvardiol's precise header, capitalising on United's vulnerability at set pieces.
Despite dominating possession, City's display lacked sharpness, while United struggled to impose themselves in the early stages. The first half concluded with the hosts in control but the match itself failing to ignite.
United's troubles deepened just 12 minutes in when Mason Mount, who had impressed midweek, was forced off with yet another injury. City, meanwhile, created the first meaningful opportunity when Phil Foden narrowly missed the target.
Their breakthrough came on 36 minutes as Kevin De Bruyne's deflected cross was perfectly met by Gvardiol, whose header left Andre Onana with no chance.
United improved marginally after the break, showing more intent but still lacking quality in the final third.
Amad Diallo tested Ederson just after the hour mark with a stinging effort, but their appeals for a penalty were waved away after a coming together between Rasmus Hojlund and Ruben Dias. Bruno Fernandes then squandered a golden chance to equalise, chipping wide when clean through on goal.
Just as it seemed Ruben Amorim's United had run out of ideas, a defensive blunder changed the game. Matheus Nunes sold Ederson short with a poor backpass, then fouled Diallo in his attempt to recover.
Bruno Fernandes coolly converted the resulting penalty three minutes from time to draw United level.
Moments later, Diallo completed the comeback with a composed finish, rounding Ederson after racing onto a long ball.
The away end erupted in jubilation as the young winger sealed a dramatic victory, delivering a much-needed boost for Amorim in his first Manchester derby.
City, unable to muster a response, now find themselves fifth in the league, nine points adrift of leaders Liverpool despite having played a game more.
Their slump continues with just one win in their last 11 matches, adding to Guardiola's mounting woes.
United, on the other hand, climbed to 12th in the table and will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to face Tottenham in the League Cup quarter-finals on 19 December, followed by a league clash against Bournemouth on 22 December.
City, meanwhile, travel to Aston Villa on 21 December, desperately seeking a turnaround in their faltering season.
