Dominant Dottin and Matthews crush Bangladesh in T20I series opener
Despite the total looking competitive, Bangladesh’s bowlers struggled to apply pressure on the West Indies during the chase.
Bangladesh women's cricket team began their three-match T20 series against the West Indies with an eight-wicket defeat on 28 January at Warner Park in St Kitts.
After falling short in the ODI series, losing 2-1, Nigar Sultana Joty's side had hoped to bounce back in the shorter format. However, they were unable to overcome a dominant performance from the hosts.
Batting first, Bangladesh posted 144 for 3 in their 20 overs. Captain Nigar Sultana Joty led the way with an unbeaten 53 off 40 balls, featuring five boundaries and two sixes.
Sharmin Akter added 37 runs, but her slow strike rate – taking 41 balls – proved costly in a format that demands quick scoring. Subhana Mostary chipped in with 22 off 21, while Dilara Akter managed 12 off 11 deliveries.
Despite the total looking competitive, Bangladesh's bowlers struggled to apply pressure on the West Indies during the chase. The hosts started strongly, with their opening partnership adding 63 runs. Though two wickets fell with the score at 73, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin ensured there were no further hiccups.
Matthews anchored the innings with an unbeaten 60 off 54 balls, while Dottin stole the show with a blistering 51 not out from just 22 deliveries. The pair's unbroken 72-run stand secured victory for the West Indies with 19 balls to spare. Earlier, opener Kyshona Knight had contributed a quickfire 29 off 21 balls.
The match saw a combined 289 runs scored, the highest aggregate in a T20 International between these two sides. For Bangladesh, Fahima Khatun was the only bowler to make an impact, taking both wickets while conceding just 15 runs in her three overs.
