Euro 2020 ‘Bottlegate’: Russia coach counters Cristiano Ronaldo, drinks bottle of Coca-Cola at press conference
Cherchesov, 57, during the press conference, picked up the Coca-Cola bottle placed next to his microphone, opened it, and took several sips as he toasted Aleksei Miranchuk’s matchwinner.
The Cristiano Ronaldo Coca-Cola bottle snub incident took an interesting turn after Russian coach Stanislav Cherchesov decided to enjoy the fizzy drink during the post-match conference. Russia had defeated Finland 1-0 in the Group B fixture to climb to second place behind leaders Belgium.
Cherchesov, 57, during the press conference, picked up the Coca-Cola bottle placed next to his microphone, opened it, and took several sips as he toasted Aleksei Miranchuk's matchwinner.
The incident was contrary to what had happened during Portugal's media interaction.
Ronaldo, who scored two late goals in a 3-0 win against Hungary, had told the watching world to 'Drink Water'. He removed two bottles of Coca-Cola from the desk in front of him during the pre-match press conference.
The gesture cost Coca-Cola $4bn from its market share.
Later on Tuesday, France, and Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba did a Cristiano Ronaldo too. Pogba, a devout Muslim, removed a Heineken beer bottle during the press conference following France's 1-0 win against Germany.
Uefa has since issued a statement in response to CR7's actions, saying 'everyone is entitled to their drink preferences' and that everyone has different 'tastes and needs'.
