Rangpur Riders fall short in dramatic super over against Hampshire in Global Super League debut
Rangpur will look to bounce back in their next match, where they face Australian club Victoria in a crucial clash.
Rangpur Riders began their Global Super League T20 campaign on 28th November with a dramatic loss to England's Hampshire Hawks in a Super Over thriller.
Hampshire won the toss and chose to bat first in Guyana. Despite a shaky start, they managed to post 132 runs before being bowled out in their allotted 20 overs.
Pakistan's Shan Masood anchored the innings with a composed 56 off 41 balls, hitting 3 fours and 2 sixes. Contributions also came from Ali Orr, who scored 28, and Tom Prest with 12.
Rangpur's bowlers excelled, particularly English pacer Jack Chappell, who delivered a stellar performance.
Chappell claimed 5 wickets for just 23 runs in his 4-over spell, while Harmeet Singh chipped in with 2 wickets to keep the Hampshire batting under control.
In response, Rangpur got off to a strong start, with Soumya Sarkar and Steven Taylor putting on 46 runs for the opening partnership.
However, once the pair was separated, the team struggled to build momentum, losing wickets at regular intervals.
By the end of their 20 overs, Rangpur had matched Hampshire's total, finishing on 132 for 8. Notable contributions came from Soumya (27), Nurul Hasan (24), Khushdil Shah (25), and Steven Taylor (20).
The tied score pushed the match into a Super Over, where Rangpur batted first and managed 12 runs, courtesy of a six from Khushdil Shah.
Captain Nurul Hasan placed his trust in Chappell to defend the target, but the bowler faltered under pressure.
Chappell conceded a six on the first ball, and with 5 runs needed from the last two deliveries, Hampshire's Liam Dawson sealed the victory with another six on the fifth ball.
Hampshire's earlier innings showcased discipline from Rangpur's bowlers, but the inability to capitalise on key moments cost them the game.
