Shakib, Tamim available for Champions Trophy, says BCB President
Both players have been absent from the national team for an extended period.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Faruque Ahmed has confirmed that Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal, two of the country's most senior cricketers, are available for selection for the Champions Trophy next year.
Both players have been absent from the national team for an extended period. Shakib, who served as a lawmaker under the Awami League government, did not return to Bangladesh following the party's removal from power.
Additionally, the all-rounder has recently been banned from bowling due to an illegal bowling action, although he remains eligible to play as a batsman.
Tamim, meanwhile, has stayed away from international cricket since his public fallout with the previous BCB leadership, led by Nazmul Hassan Papon.
Speaking after a board meeting at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium, Faruque clarified that neither Shakib nor Tamim had retired from international cricket, which technically makes them eligible for selection.
"There is no official policy regarding this. Since neither player has retired, selectors can consider them if they feel their inclusion is necessary for the team," Faruque said.
When asked directly about their availability, Faruque reiterated, "If a cricketer hasn't retired, he is automatically available for selection."
Chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu recently expressed optimism about Tamim Iqbal's return to the national setup, following his impressive performances in the NCL T20. However, he emphasised that the decision ultimately rests with the BCB.
"Tamim's participation gives us hope. I believe we will soon know whether he will be available for the Champions Trophy. If he is, it will be a significant boost for the team," Ashraf commented.
Tamim is currently playing in domestic competitions and is set to captain Fortune Barishal in the upcoming BPL, which begins on 30 December.
While Faruque confirmed Shakib's theoretical availability, he could not provide concrete updates about the player's readiness or willingness to participate.
"Shakib's situation is unique. During our last series in the West Indies, he was not in the mental state to play international cricket, which made him unavailable. At this stage, only Shakib can confirm his plans, including whether he will participate in the BPL. I have no new updates about his condition," Faruque added.
Despite being unable to return to Bangladesh, Shakib continues to play in franchise leagues abroad. His participation in the Champions Trophy remains uncertain, although his availability would be a significant asset for the team.
