Shakib’s comeback in Champions Trophy a priority, confirms BCB President
While Shakib announced his T20 retirement during Bangladesh’s Test series against India, he expressed a desire to continue playing ODIs.
Shakib Al Hasan's return to the Bangladesh national team for the Champions Trophy is a top priority for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Scheduled to take place from 19 February to 9 March in Pakistan and the UAE, the tournament could see the star all-rounder donning the national colours again after a prolonged absence.
BCB president Faruque Ahmed confirmed the board's intent during a media briefing on 3 January, revealing that discussions are ongoing to ensure Shakib's participation.
"We will try to include Shakib Al Hasan in the Champions Trophy squad," Faruque stated. "A final decision will be made during the BPL. Shakib is a valuable asset to our cricket, and we aim to field the best team for the tournament."
Shakib's absence from international cricket dates back to Bangladesh's Test series against South Africa last year. Political instability in Bangladesh prevented him from returning to the country, scuttling his plans to retire from Test cricket after a farewell match at home.
The situation also kept him out of subsequent series against Afghanistan and the West Indies, as well as the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
While Shakib announced his T20 retirement during Bangladesh's Test series against India, he expressed a desire to continue playing ODIs.
Faruque acknowledged this, stating, "His intention to retire from Test cricket by playing his last match in Bangladesh was clear, but external circumstances delayed his return. Despite this, we are hopeful of including him in the Champions Trophy squad."
Meanwhile, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, who recently relinquished the T20 captaincy, has been confirmed as Bangladesh's skipper for the Champions Trophy.
Shanto's tenure as ODI captain was set to end in December, but the BCB extended his leadership for the global tournament. Faruque commented, "Shanto missed the last series due to injury, but he remains our captain for the Champions Trophy. There's no reason to change that plan."
As Shakib's return becomes a focal point, the BCB is also planning discussions with the government to address any security concerns that might arise during the Champions Trophy.
Faruque added, "We will consult the ministry regarding Shakib's inclusion. His experience could be invaluable for this prestigious tournament."
