Shakib’s series of misdemeanours

Many viewed Shakib Al Hasan kicking the stumps as a sign of speaking out against the umpiring in the ongoing Dhaka Premier League (DPL), which has been questionable. 

Many joked that it was his way of inaugurating the EURO 2020 which kicks off later on Friday night. 

But one thing is for sure, the actions by Shakib have been the talk of the cricket fraternity in Bangladesh. 

This though is not the first time that Shakib has been involved in a controversy, and for his fans and fans of Bangladesh cricket, won't probably be the last one either.

Let's go back to February 20, 2014, where during the second ODI against Sri Lanka in Mirpur Shakib was out after playing a poor shot. 

With Bangladesh in a difficult situation after his dismissal, the commentators and TV camera focused on Shakib (who was back in the dressing room) and his poor mode of dismissal. 

When Shakib noticed that the camera was focusing on him, he lost it pointed towards his groin area.

The offensive gesticulation by Shakib was there for the world to see and it eventually copped him a three-match ban and a three lakh taka fine. 

BCB suspends him for six months
2014 was not a good year for him though, as he later was involved in an incident where he allegedly hit a fan during Bangladesh's ODI match against India in June. 

With Shakib's wife watching the game in the stadium, some fans taunted her and this provoked Shakib. 

While Shakib denied hitting any fan, he did admit that he had a stern word with a fan for this. 

Later in July, Shakib would irk the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for leaving the country to take part in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) without receiving a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the BCB. 

After being brought back to the country in the middle of the CPL, there were rumours of him being in a verbal altercation with the head coach back then, Chandika Hathurusinghe. 

BCB had had enough and decided to ban him from all forms of cricket for six months. 

Shakib loses it against umpires 
Now Shakib having an issue with local umpires is not new. 

In the 2015 edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), there was a similar incident to what happened on Friday. 

When the on-field umpire gave a not-out decision while Shakib was bowling to batsman Mushfiqur Rahim (who was also the batsman today), Shakib couldn't control his temper.

He gave the umpire, Tanvir Ahmed, an earful and that cost him a fine of USD 250 and a one-match suspension. 

In 2018, during a heated match against Sri Lanka in the Nidahas trophy, Shakib once again was unhappy with the umpiring. 

Isuru Udana was the bowler and he bowled two bouncers over shoulder height. 

Given the laws, only one bouncer is allowed.

The umpire first gave the second bouncer a no-ball but then changed his decision, which made Shakib come out to the field and instruct the batsmen to come off the field and forfeit the match.

Although that didn't happen, and Bangladesh eventually won the match to reach the final, it cost Shakib 25 per cent of his match fee and gave him a demerit point. 

The ICC Ban
2019 was a year of incredible highs and lows for Shakib. 

It started with him missing the team photoshoot to allegedly shoot a commercial instead, which had the media and fans talking. 

Then he had the incredible run with the bat in the World Cup, even though Bangladesh ended that tournament disappointingly. 

And then, later that year, Shakib was the leader among the players when they made a 13-point demand to the board to increase match fees and improve the domestic structure. 

But from there, just when it seemed like Shakib would be the captain in all three formats, everything came crashing down.

He was hit with a two-year ban from all forms of cricket by the ICC for having multiple WhatsApp approaches by Indian bookie, Deepak Agarwal, and failing to report them to the ICC or the BCB. 

Upon agreeing to his indiscretion and promising to report to the ICC's anti-corruption unit, if any such approaches by a bookie were made, his ban lasted for a year instead.

In a bit of a deja vu from 2015, the bowler was Shakib, the batter was Mushfiq and the umpire turned down an lbw appeal from Shakib causing him to lose his cool. 

This time though, Shakib kicked the stumps and then after some verbal back-and-forth, picked up the stumps and threw them on the ground. 

With rain then interrupting the match, Shakib was then seen having a verbal altercation with Khaled Mahmud too.

Shakib's Mohammedan eventually won the match by 31 runs (DLS method) but CCDM chairman Kazi Inam Ahmed said that a decision on Shakib will be taken after the match referee's report.

Things seemed to cool down after the match between both teams and Shakib even issued a public apology on his official socials. 

The damage, however, has been done and this is yet another stain in the career of the most successful cricketer that Bangladesh has ever produced.
