Tamim and Malan shine as Barishal end Dhaka’s playoff hopes
The win propelled Barishal to second place on the points table and kept their title defence on track.
Fortune Barishal secured a commanding 8-wicket victory over Dhaka Capitals on 16 January in Chattogram, with Tamim Iqbal and Dawid Malan leading the chase of a modest 140-run target.
The defeat ended Dhaka's slim hopes of reaching the playoffs, as they languish at the bottom of the table with just one win from eight matches.
Winning the toss, Dhaka's captain Thisara Perera opted to bat but saw his side falter to a disappointing 139 all out in 19.3 overs. Despite opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim's valiant 62 off 44 balls, the rest of the batting lineup crumbled under pressure.
Litton Das, who had struck a century in the previous game, managed only 13 runs before falling to Ripon Mondol. Sabbir Rahman (10) and Perera (0) also failed to provide support.
Barishal's bowlers kept Dhaka in check throughout the innings, with left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam standing out with figures of 3 for 39. Fast bowlers Fahim Ashraf and Jahanzaib Khan also chipped in with crucial breakthroughs, ensuring Dhaka could not post a competitive total.
In response, Barishal made light work of the chase despite losing opener Najmul Hossain Shanto for just 2 runs in the second over.
Tamim Iqbal and Dawid Malan then combined for a 117-run partnership that sealed the match. Tamim, playing in front of his home crowd in Chattogram, scored a fluent 61 off 48 balls, striking six boundaries and a six. Malan remained unbeaten on 49, guiding his side to victory with 24 balls to spare.
Jahanzaib Khan provided the finishing touch with a quick cameo, smashing 13 runs off just 4 balls to complete the chase. The win propelled Barishal to second place on the points table and kept their title defence on track.
Dhaka's latest defeat highlighted their persistent struggles in the tournament. Aside from Tanzid's fighting knock, their batting collapsed yet again. Tanzid's innings accounted for nearly half of his side's total, while the rest of the batters combined for only 77 runs.
The loss officially eliminated Dhaka from playoff contention, leaving them with little to play for in their remaining matches.
