Honor’s new flagship phone is a camera beast
Honor lets users preview the AI’s enhancements side-by-side with the original image, so that they can decide whether to keep the untouched version or the enhanced one
Honor has recently launched their latest flagship smartphone series, the Magic 7 series, and it has created a well-deserved buzz with its photography capabilities, along with its AI prowess.
While every phone in 2025 will have AI capabilities to some degree, what makes the Magic 7 Pro stand out is that its AI capabilities do not rely on cloud processing, rather the system runs entirely on-device, thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite at its core.
At the Magic 7 Pro's heart, there is Honor's Light and Shadow Portrait Large Model, an AI system trained on over a million image samples. The AI system improves dynamic range, balances light and shadow, recovers highlights, and enhances details like hair and eyes.
It also smooths skin tones and adds an adjustable bokeh effect for a polished look. The process is seamless: just toggle the AI feature in the camera app and shoot.
AndroidAuthority compared the Magic 7 Pro with one of the market's best camera phones, the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL. The Magic 7 Pro delivered warmer tones, vivid skin colours, and sharp subject details, thanks to its 48MP output — four times the resolution of the Pixel's 12MP. Cropped shots revealed impressive detail, from fine hairs to bright eyes. While the contrast might be a bit bold for some, the added pop is perfect for social media.
Honor lets users preview the AI's enhancements side-by-side with the original image, so that they can decide whether to keep the untouched version or the enhanced one. The AI does not just refine details but subtly "beautifies", which raises an important question: Do we want photos that are realistic or flattering?
