Farmers have completed harvesting of 97% of the boro paddy in seven districts of the country's haor regions.
This season, boro paddy has been cultivated on 4,53,400 hectares of land in the haors of Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Kishoreganj, Netrokona and Brahmanbaria districts. The government is implementing a range of initiatives to eliminate risks associated with crop cultivation in the haor region, reads the media release.
As part of the initiatives, harvesters and reapers have been given to the farmers in the haor areas with a 70% subsidy to help them speed up harvesting.
As per the Department of Agricultural Extension, more than 4,400 combine harvesters were used in paddy harvesting in seven haor districts this time.
This year, boro paddy has been cultivated on 50.58 lakh hectares of land across the country, up by around 20,000 hectares from the target.
The target of boro rice production for this year was set at 2.22 crore tonnes.
Recently at a programme marking the boro paddy harvesting in Moulvibazar's Sreemangal, Agriculture Minister Md Abdus Shahid said in a bid to increase boro farming, seeds, fertilisers and other equipment worth of Tk215 crores have been provided free of cost to the farmers this year.
He said successful harvesting of boro paddy would eliminate any concerns regarding food security in the country.
