15 injured as Hefazat men clash with police in Gazipur
Hefazat activists brought out a demonstration in the Chandna intersection area after Jummah prayers as part of the organisation’s scheduled programme.
At least 15 people were injured in a clash between police personnel and activists of Hefazat-e-Islam in Chandna of Gazipur on Friday.
The injured including police members and Hefazat activists were given treatment at a local hospital.
According to the police and eye witnesses, Hefazat activists brought out a demonstration in the Chandna intersection area after Jummah prayers as part of the organisation's scheduled programme.
The procession made its way to the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and took position on the highway.
They locked into an altercation with police as the members of the law enforcement agency tried to bar them.
At one stage, police fired tear shells and rubber bullets to break up the gathering. In response, Hefazat men also hurled stones towards the policemen followed by chases and counter chases between the two groups.
GMP DC Zakir Hossain said when Hefazat activists tried to block the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, the police chased them. They fired hundreds of tear gas shells and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters. Currently the situation is under control.
