17 injured as bus loses control, hits covered van and pickup truck in Sitakunda

At least 17 people suffered severe to moderate injuries after a passenger bus lost control and hit a covered van and a pickup truck on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Chattogram's Sitakunda today (31 December).
The accident took place near the Mustafa CNG Filling Station in the municipality area of Sitakunda around 12:00pm, according to police and fire service officials.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence officials and locals rescued 17 people and admitted them to the local upazila health complex, said Sitakunda Fire Service Station's Duty Officer Sakhawat Hossain.
Of them, seven with critical injuries have been sent to the Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
"The bus lost control and rammed a covered van and pickup truck from behind. The bus driver, his assistant and several passengers suffered injuries in the incident. The bus driver got trapped inside the wrecked bus," Sakhawat said.
"Later, the firemen rescued the driver alive after about 20 minutes of trying to open the bus using heavy irons. His legs got broken in many places," added the fire service official.
The Highway Police have recovered the bus and the covered van.
