2 arrested in Buet student death case fail alcohol test
Muhtasim Masud died after the car the arrestees were driving crashed into his motorcycle at Nila Market intersection in Purbachal
Two out of the three youths arrested in a case filed over the death of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (Buet) student Muhtasim Masud have failed dope test for alcohol.
Confirming the development to The Business Standard this evening (20 December), Narayanganj Civil Surgeon Dr AFM Moshiur Rahman said the dope tests were conducted at the General Hospital (Victoria), Narayanganj earlier in the day after the three youths were arrested.
"Arrestees Mubin Al Mamun, Mirajul Karim, and Asif Chowdhury were tested for alcohol and the results of Mubin and Mirajul came back positive," added Dr Moshiur.
According to Mehedi Islam, senior assistant superintendent of police (ASP - Ga Cricle) in Narayanganj, the tests were conducted after police found an empty bottle of liquor and a can of beer inside the car, which Mubin was driving, following the incident in the early hours of today that also left two of Muhtasim's friends critically injured.
The recovery had raised suspicion that Mubin was driving under the influence of alcohol.
The drug or dope test examines a bodily specimen (like urine, saliva, blood, or hair) for the presence of one or more usually illegal or banned substances such as alcohol.
Meanwhile, Muhtasim's father Masud Mia turned speechless when his son's body arrived at their home in the capital's Green Road area this afternoon.
"My son was stopped by some policemen at a check post at the Purbachal area, he was about to show them all the papers. All of a sudden, some drunk youths drove a car recklessly and hit my son's motorcycle. A former army official's son killed my son; I want exemplary punishment for all of them [the youths]," he told reporters.
When Muhtasim's dead body was being taken to Mirpur for the funeral, his mother Raisa Sultana bid a final farewell. She could only utter some words: "Baba, sleep in peace! We will meet again."
Talking to reporters she said in the early hours today, they got a call from one of Mutasim's friends, Kamrul. "Mustasim is no more, he died in an accident," upon hearing these words it felt like an earthquake to her.
"My son went to Buet on Thursday evening and he was supposed to come back within 11pm. At 11:30pm, I called him and he informed us that they were at Purbachal and having dinner. He told us he would stay at the university hall. I went to sleep after talking to him. I couldn't imagine that I would have to wake up with the bad news," she told reporters.
Muhtasim, 22, was killed and his two friends were critically injured after Mubin's car hit their stationary motorcycle on the 300-feet road at the Nila Market intersection in Purbachal, under Narayanganj's Rupganj upazila, at around 3am.
Muhtasim was a student of Buet's Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). Injured Amit Saha, 22, and Mehedi Hasan, 22, are also students of the same department, said Senior ASP Mehedi.
Amit was admitted to DMCH while Hasan was to Square Hospital.
Muhtasim's father Masud Mia filed the case with Rupganj police over the incident later in the day.
Mubin, 20, Mirajul, 22, and Asif, who were in the car that crashed into Muhtasim's motorcycle, were arrested in the case and sent to court after the dope tests were conducted, said Senior ASP Mehedi.
A Narayanganj court later in the afternoon sent them to jail and fixed Sunday for a hearing in the case, confirmed the plaintiff's lawyer Advocate Rezaul Karim Khan.
According to case details, Muhtasim and his friends went to Nila Market on his motorcycle at around 8pm yesterday (19 December) to have dinner. On their way back to Dhaka at around 3am, they were stopped by the police at the checkpost in Nila Market intersection.
The three youths were on the stationary motorcycle and talking to the police when the car recklessly driven by Mubin crashed into them, killing Muhtasim on the spot and leaving Amit and Hasan with severe injuries.
Police and locals then detained the car's three passengers, including its driver Mubin, son of Brig Gen (retd) Abdullah Al Mamun of Mirpur DOHS. The car registered under Abdullah's name was impounded by police.
Mirajul is the son of Rizwanul Karim of Mirpur's Pirerbagh area and Asif is the son of Bahauddin Chowdhury of Uttara Sector 13.
Meanwhile, terming Muhtasim's death as murder, Buet students demonstrated outside the Rupganj police station in the morning and organised a rally at the Palashi intersection near the campus in the capital later in the day, according to media reports.
They put forward six demands including registering a case, showing those detained as arrested, compensating the family of the deceased, and ensuring treatment of those injured.
