Bangladesh Coast Guard seized 30,000 metres of fishing net and 60kg hilsa in separate drives from Thursday morning to evening in Meghna River.
The net was destroyed on Friday morning while the fish was distributed among local orphanages, said the Momtajul Arif, station commander, Bangladesh Coast Guard.
The government imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, storing and transporting hilsa from October 9 to 30.
District fisheries officer Asadul Baki told UNB that they fined Tk 2.17 lakh, filed 163 cases and seized 47.5 tonnes of net and about four tonnes of mother hilsa since October 9.
River Police, Coast Guard, district and upazila taskforces, mobile team members have so far punished 154 fishermen for defying the fishing ban, he added.
