3.8% of ethnic groups in Sherpur unemployed

An average of 3.80% of people aged 10 years and above among ethnic groups in Sherpur district are unemployed, according to a recent Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) survey.
The number is slightly higher than the national unemployment rate which is 3.6%, according to the labour force survey (LFS- 2022), conducted at the national level.
In the rural areas of the district, the unemployment rate among ethnic groups is 3.71% while the rate is much higher, 4.49%, in urban areas.
According to the BBS report, published today (30 September), the Sherpur Ethnic NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training: Age Group 15-24) is 24.73%. According to Population and Housing Census 2022, the overall NEET population in Sherpur was 34.84%.
The NEET population among Garos is 23.17%, Koch 28.61%, Barman 25.30%, Hajong 14.29% Dalu 30.70%, Hudi 29.03% and 40% other groups.
BBS officials told The Business Standard that the "Sherpur Small Ethnic Survey 2024 (SES 2024)" is a special independent one related to various socio-economic indicators and data surrounding ethnic groups. It was mainly conducted following a special request from the Sherpur district administration.
The survey also provides information on household size, education, health, food security, social security programmes, disability, gender-based statistics, labour force rates and remittances, among other factors.
Data for the survey was collected from 1-15 March this year.
The report further specified that the source of income for ethnic groups is the highest in the agricultural sector, 65.02% while the second highest is service accounting for 21.38%.
For the ethnic people, 1.42% of their household depends on remittance as their main source of income.
The survey finds that 35.77% of the people never attended school. There is a tiny portion, 3.24%, who are graduates and are above education level. The Sherpur ethnic literacy rate, for people aged 7 years and above, is 64.08%.
