4 BGB platoons deployed in Shahbagh, nearby areas to maintain order
Six platoons deployed in Chattogram city as well
The government has deployed four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Shahbagh, Matsya Bhaban and InterContinental Dhaka hotel areas of Dhaka city to maintain law and order following recent incidents of unrest.
Shariful Islam, public relations officer of the BGB, confirmed the development to The Business Standard this afternoon (26 November).
However, he did not provide specific details regarding the reason for the deployment.
Meanwhile, another six platoons of BGB personnel have been deployed in Chattogram city to keep the law-and-order situation normal as well.
Yesterday, six platoons of the paramilitary force were deployed in the capital's Demra area following clashes between the students of Dr Mahbubur Rahman Mollah College and those of Kabi Nazrul Government College and Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College.
A little-known organisation named Ahingsa Ganaavyuthan Bangladesh also tried to gather a massive crowd by bringing people from different districts in Suhrawardy Udyan and Shahbagh areas in the name of a rally, for which it never received permission.
The BGB members were also seen patrolling in Banglamotor area yesterday.
Earlier on Sunday (24 November), a group of people, comprising teachers and students of various Islamic institutes, had gathered in front of Bangla daily Prothom Alo's office in the capital's Karwan Bazar area to protest what they called the newspaper leaning towards Indian hegemony.
Organisers were said to have slaughtered a cow, which they were to feed the participants. In the evening, however, police came and drove the protesters away from the scene.
