This year’s honourees included individuals who have excelled in diverse fields
The Rokeya Padak 2024, Bangladesh's highest honour for women, was awarded to four exceptional women at a ceremony held at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka today (9 December).
The event, graced by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, recognised these women for their significant contributions to various fields, including education, labour rights, women's empowerment, and sports.
This year's honorees included individuals who have excelled in diverse fields.
Perween Hasan, a renowned academic and activist, was recognised for her relentless efforts in promoting gender equality and education.
Taslima Akhter, an award-winning photographer and activist, who is known for using her art to spotlight the struggles of workers, especially women in the garment sector, and to advocate for systemic change.
Shireen Haque, head of the Women Affairs Commission and a founding member of the feminist group Nariopokkho, received the award for her influential role in advancing women's rights and shaping public policies that foster gender inclusivity.
Rani Hamid, an 81-year-old chess legend, was celebrated for her remarkable achievements in the world of sports, including being a 20-time Bangladesh National Women's Chess Champion and a three-time British Women's Chess Champion. Her legacy continues to inspire young women in sports.
The Rokeya Padak is named after Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, a pioneering advocate for women's rights and education during British colonial rule. She is considered as the mother of women's emancipation in Bengal for breaking barriers to women's education, particularly among Muslim women.
The award is presented annually on Begum Rokeya Day, commemorating her tireless advocacy for women's rights and reform.
