4 still missing 20 hours after boat capsizes in Padma
The boat was carrying 16 farmers and labourers who were returning from work in the fields when it sank near Char Majardia ghat
Authorities are yet to find four people who went missing after their boat capsized in the Padma River near Char Majardia in Poba, Rajshahi yesterday (1 September).
The incident occurred around 7pm yesterday as the boat was returning from a tomato field.
The missing individuals have been identified as Raju, 22, Sabuj, 20, Faruk, 19, and Mohammad Ali, 38, all residents of Char Majardia, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence.
Despite rescue efforts by locals last night and a search operation by Fire Service divers this morning, the missing individuals have not yet been found as of 3:00pm today (2 September), they said.
"The strong currents are making it impossible to continue the rescue operation. If the missing individuals have drowned, their bodies may have drifted far away. Therefore, the search operation will not continue for now," AKM Murshed, Assistant Director of Rajshahi Fire Service said.
The rescue operation, which began at 6am today, was suspended by 11am due to strong currents in the river.
The boat was carrying 16 farmers and labourers who were returning from work in the fields when it sank near Char Majardia ghat.
While most of the passengers managed to swim to safety, four individuals remain unaccounted for.
