48 Indian fishermen detained for fishing illegally
The Bangladesh Navy and Bangladesh Coast Guard have detained 48 Indian fishermen along with three trawlers for illegally fishing in Bangladeshi waters in the Bay of Bengal, despite a 22-day government ban on Hilsa fishing.
The fishermen were apprehended on Thursday afternoon from the deep sea near the fairway adjacent to Mongla Port in Bagerhat. They were later handed over to the police this morning, as confirmed by Md Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Mongla Police Station.
The navy and coast guard were preparing to file separate cases against the detainees on charges of illegal fishing, Anisur Rahman added.
The 22-day ban on Hilsa fishing, which aims to protect marine resources, began at midnight on 12 October.
